Vytautas Magnus University (VMU) (Lithuanian: Vytauto Didžiojo Universitetas (VDU)) is a public university in Kaunas, Lithuania. The university was founded in 1922 during the interwar period as an alternate national university. Initially it was known as the University of Lithuania, but in 1930 the university was renamed to Vytautas Magnus University, commemorating 500 years of death of Vytautas the Great, the Lithuanian ruler, well known for the nation's greatest historical expansion in the 15th century.It is one of the leading universities of Lithuania, has now about 8,700 students, including Master and Ph.D. candidates. There are slightly fewer than 1000 employees, including approximately 70 professors.
Language requirement: Students are required a minimum of B2 Level English. Students must get an official document (in English language and signed) stating their English language proficiency from their home university or provide other tests’ results. English language proficiency should be indicated according to the European Language Levels.
Living Expenses
Lithuania is considered an inexpensive country to live in and students who study in Kaunas have to expect a need of 350-800 EUR per month including: dormitory/flat rent 70-200 EUR, food 150-250 EUR, learning aid 15-30 EUR and leisure 100-300 EUR. A survey which was carried out in academic year 2015 / 2016 has shown that 61% of VMU International students have spent up to 400 Eur / month, 30% students spent 400-600 Eur / month and 9% spent more than 600 Eur / month.
Students are able to cut some expenses by using the Lithuanian student identity card, International student identity card or Erasmus Student Network (ESN) card for discounts. Full information about the cards is provided by Vytautas Magnus University after student arrival.
Accommodation
The university accommodation is organized by VMU Student Affairs Office. The number of available places of VMU dormitory accommodation is limited and offered on a first come – first serve basis for the students who apply with the online accommodation form.
