Pontificia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), is a private non-profit Catholic University located in Rio de Janeiro. It was created in 1941 in order to develop knowledge based on humanistic values. Now with, approximately, 10,000 undergraduate students and 2,500 graduate students PUC-Rio is internationally recognized as one of the top five universities in Brazil and one of the two best in Rio de Janeiro.


Students MUST have working knowledge of Portuguese in order to study at this institution. The University offers pre-term intensive Portuguese courses for an extra fee, however, students will not be able to study at PUC without fluency in the language.

 

In order to provide exchange students with enriching activities during their stay in Rio de Janeiro, a mandatory administrative cost is charged to all exchange students.

Accommodation


  • International students have the option for homstays, where they have the best chance to experience the Brazilian way of life and to speak everyday Portuguese.
  • Each student has his/her own private room in a family home recommended by the international office at PUC-Rio.
  • Prices range from US$550 to US$750 per month with breakfast included (Price in Reais: R$1050 per month to R$1350). Access to kitchen and laundry facilities and telephone is to be arranged by the student together with the family.
  • Most families live near the university, around 15 minutes by city bus (R$2.50 fare).
