This evening, June 6, 2024, Reichman University awarded honorary doctorate degrees to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the State of Israel since October 7. The recipients included Noa Tishby, Brig. Gen. Yisrael Shomer, Haim Jelin, Eyal Naveh, and Captain Karni Gez.

Noa Tishby is a long-standing advocate for Israel who has worked diligently to counter efforts to delegitimize the State of Israel and combat rising global antisemitism. Since October 7, Tishby has emerged as a prominent ambassador for the Jewish people and has been at the forefront of global Israeli public diplomacy. Brig. Gen. Yisrael Shomer, the commander of the IDF’s 146th Division, has been appointed as the next head of the Operations Division. Shomer has devoted many years to the strength and security of the State of Israel. On the morning of October 7, as a resident of Kibbutz Kfar Aza, he fought with remarkable courage and resourcefulness to protect the residents of the kibbutz. Haim Jelin, a resident of Kibbutz Be’eri, has demonstrated a decades-long dedication to the residents of the Gaza Envelope. Since the October 7th attack, Jelin has served as one of their most prominent advocates, honorably representing the evacuees from the Gaza Envelope communities who aspire to return to their homes in absolute safety. Eyal Naveh, founder of “Brothers and Sisters for Israel,” established the country’s largest civilian emergency headquarters on October 7. This center continues to work diligently to meet the needs of the IDF, the evacuees from the south and north, and the families of the reservists, and has been engaged in crucial efforts to locate the hostages and missing persons. Captain Karni Gez, the commander of the first female tank company in the IDF, made history alongside the soldiers under her command when they became the first female combat soldiers to engage in armored combat. On October 7, they saved the lives of numerous residents of the Gaza envelope communities.

The degrees were conferred by Prof. Uriel Reichman, founding president and chairman of university’s board of directors, Prof. Boaz Ganor, president of Reichman University, and the university’s chancellor Mr. Oudi Recanati. The honor is bestowed upon individuals whose actions exemplify the values of Zionism, entrepreneurship, social responsibility, and academic integrity, and in recognition of their impactful contributions to the State of Israel, the Jewish people, and Reichman University.

Founding President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Reichman University, Prof. Uriel Reichman: “Tonight’s honorary doctorate conferment ceremony, in the university’s 30th year, is unlike any we have had before. We are in a different time, a difficult and challenging period — a time in which the functioning of the Israeli government is disintegrating and, in contrast, a time in which we are witnessing the resurgence of the spirit of volunteerism in the nation and the commitment of individuals, which are coalescing into the unity and strength of the many. We gather here tonight to speak about heroism, sacrifice, and a vision for fixing our current reality.”
