Argov Study Tours

lnternational Study Tour

A fundamental part of the Argov year is an annual study-tour to Belgium and the United States. The tour is designed to give the fellows an inside, first-hand perception on European and American economic and political issues, business and international relations through meetings with leaders from government, business, academia, and the non-profit sector, among others.

In addition to presenting an opportunity for the Argov Fellows to learn and be inspired, the study tour also gives the students a chance to put their skills into practice. During the first semester, fellows take classes in political theory, public speaking, public policy, strategy and public diplomacy, among others, which provide them with the tools and background knowledge to participate actively in all of the meetings and challenge speakers to answer relevant and sometimes difficult questions. The students are also required in many situations to present their own perspectives and ideas to speakers and guests during lecture and at events.

The study tour kicks off with a visit to Brussels and the European Union. In the EU’s different agencies and discussions with different members and employees, students gain insight into Europe’s internal challenges, international relations in general and relations with the Middle East and Israel specifically. Speakers include EU officials and politicians, Jewish community leaders and young professionals.

The tour continues to the United States and to meetings in Washington DC, Boston, and New York. Washington DC introduces the fellows to the heart of American democracy, politics, diplomacy and academic research. Fellows have met in previous years with Supreme Court Justices, Congressmen and women, senators, advisors to US presidents, journalists, Israeli Ambassadors and leading academic researchers at the Brookings Institution, and the Hoover Institution among others.

In Boston the Argov fellows are hosted by Harvard University. The fellows spend time on campus with students and faculty, study introduction classes taught in M.A courses and are introduced to research fellowships and opportunities offered. Boston is also home to many of the program's friends and supporters, who have graciously hosted the Fellows over the past years.

In New York fellows are meeting influential business people, journalists and academics. In past years fellows have met with high profile business men and women, entrepreneurs, Jewish community leaders, prominent supporters of Israel, Israeli UN Ambassadors and many others.

Study Tours in Israel

In addition to the academic program offered in the Argov Fellowship, students participate in study tours in Israel to gain first-hand knowledge of the challenges facing Israel and its diverse population.

Tours include among others:

Day Tour to Jerusalem:

The tour highlights Jerusalem's place as Israel's capitol and sensitive issues surrounding the city's history and current status. The tour also gives students the opportunity to meet with some of Israel's most influential decision makers and historical figures. In previous years the Argov Fellows have met with Jewish Agency Chairman Natan Sharanksy, Supreme Court Justice Eliyakim Rubenstein, Ministry of Foreign Affairs officials and local Jerusalem officials.

Haredi Community Tour:

Ultraorthodox community leaders give the Fellows a close look into their lifestyle and present the challenges and concerns from within the community. Discussions focus on the integrations of ultraorthodox men and women in the workforce as well as IDF and national service, modernization and technology in the ultraorthodox community and other topical issues.

Arab Sector Tour:

Students are introduced to art in the Arab world at the Um El Fahem Art Gallery, tour Um El Fahem to learn about the city's recent troubled history and meet with students and faculty at the Al Qasemi School to learn about education in the Arab sector. The tour allows students to raise questions about Arab identity in Israel and learn about the internal cultural conflicts facing Arab communities. The tour is organized and run by Dr. Dalia Fadila who also lectures during the Argov Fellows Program.
