Contemporary Middle East Track

The Contemporary Middle East, one of the main Tracks offered as part of the International Program in Government, exposes the students to the many faces of the Arab world and the non-Arab countries in the Middle East. It will help you better understand the region you have chosen to live in, politically and culturally, and give you the tools you need to shape its future.

Track Highlights

  • Topics discussed as part of the Track include Arab culture and language, the impact of the Abraham Accords on the region, radical Islamic movements and the various sects that make up the Middle East mosaic, the geopolitical shifts, social developments such as the rise in the status of women in Arab countries, the desire to diversify the regional economy, economic cooperation such as the energy market,  and the relations between the Middle East and Western and Asian powers.

Why specialize in Contemporary Middle East?

  • The Contemporary Middle East Track grants the full range of knowledge and tools required by students who wish to engage in Middle East issues during their studies, as part of graduate degrees, and in their future careers. These include linguistic abilities, becoming acquainted with the challenges and needs of the Middle East countries, acquiring in-depth knowledge and understanding of the complex reality in the region, and obtaining analytical tools for evaluating the society and politics of a region that experiences frequent change, unpredictable shifts, and strategic upheavals.

  • In addition to learning about the history of the region, this track engages in contemporary aspects and takes a forward-looking approach.  It prepares students who wish to continue graduate studies in this field (Master's and Ph.D.), work as researchers in think tanks focused on the Middle East or in companies doing business in the region, and those who wish to serve as decision-makers in the diplomatic corps in Israel and abroad. Ultimately, it will sharpen your ability to better understand Israel and its neighbors.
