Judicial Assistance Practicum

This practicum offers students a unique opportunity to experience the world of judicial decision-making firsthand, and affords a rare glimpse into the daily work of a Magistrates' Court or District Court judge's chambers.

The program comprises work at a judge's chambers for one day a week throughout a full legal year, as part of which students, working closely with the staff in the judge's chambers, will be partners to legal research, hearings, and the daily work on ongoing cases.

The program includes intense academic training, during which students will gain experience in legal research, legal writing, reading and summarizing rulings, presenting legal arguments, and the Code of Civil Procedure.

The program caters to third and fourth-year students. Admission is based on personal and academic achievements, and an interview.

Students are assigned to judges' chambers following an interview with the program's faculty and a second interview at the court. Once the interview process is concluded, students' suitability for the program will be evaluated, and they will be subsequently assigned to a judge's chambers in one of the following legal fields: Family, contracts, torts, civil, administrative, criminal, tax, corporate and bankruptcy, real estate, transportation, commercial, financial, and more.

The program awards students four semester hours, and spans one full legal year. As part of the training offered, students will gain experience in legal research, legal writing, reading and summarizing rulings, presenting legal arguments, and the Code of Civil Procedure.
