The Challenge

The radicalization of individuals, leading them to commit acts of aggression and terror is a leading concern across much of the world. The internet and related digital media are perceived by many to be contributing to radicalization, since they enable people with extreme views to find and connect with like-minded people at any time or place. The fear is that these individuals get trapped in an echo chamber or filter bubble, lacking a diverse range of opinions, contributing to polarization and potentially radicalization that endangers peaceful coexistence. While empirical research challenges the prominence of such a process, it is impossible to rule out some cases in which radicalization is amplified by such a reinforcing process online.

Our Vision

To proactively utilize the power of the Internet to foster cooperation among its diverse segments in working together on common superordinate goals.

Preventing radicalization could be supported by helping individuals to build a self-identity which is both complex and autonomous and not based on negative attitudes or comparisons with an outgroup. This healthier self-identity would recognize the goals and values shared with others outside of their ingroup. Examples already abound of how individuals can build a healthy identity and also identify with a common goal as a member of the global village. The challenge is in reaching individuals vulnerable to radical ideas and networks.
