Today, SMU is home to more than 7,000 students and comprises six schools: the School of Accountancy; Lee Kong Chian School of Business; School of Economics; School of Information Systems; School of Law; and School of Social Sciences.
The Fall semester runs from mid-August until early December, and the Spring semester runs from early January until late April.

Monthly Costs


  • Students should budget approximately S$7,500-S$9,000 per term (Including rental of housing).

 

  • Students are responsible for other administrative fees such as Student’s Pass (Visa), Miscellaneous Fees, etc.

 

  • Student’s Pass (Student Visa) Fee

There will be a non-refundable processing fee of S$30 for each application, a S$60 issuance fee for the Student's Pass and a S$30 fee for a Multiple Journey Visa (if applicable). Approval is subject to terms and conditions.  

 

  • Miscellaneous Fee

A one-time miscellaneous fee of approximately S$250 per term or S$400 per year is applicable. The fee includes the cost for the SMU Medical Insurance, IT services, registration and matriculation as well as student activities. The miscellaneous fee is mandatory and non-refundable.

 

  • Estimated Monthly Expenses

The estimated monthly living expenses for an exchange / visiting student in Singapore is approximately S$2,000–S$3,000. Listed below are some expected monthly expense items.

 

  • Accommodation (subjected to type of accommodation) S$900 - S$1,500
  • Food    S$600 - S$800
  • Transportation  S$300 - S$400
  • Telecommunications     S$30 - S$50
  • Book and Stationery      S$50 - S$100
  • Miscellaneous (entertainment etc.)         S$100 - S$300

Accommodation


  • SMU does not provide on-campus housing for exchange students. Exchange students must seek private accommodation, usually with help of private agents (a list of housing agents will be provided after students are accepted into the exchange programme)..
  • Singapore has one of the highest living standards in the world. Daily necessities and luxuries are readily available. Students will find that Singapore is more expensive than other South-East Asian countries and this may come as a bit of a shock for students who are on a budget. Cost of rent is approximately S$900-S$1800 per month per person, assuming 3-6 students share a private apartment.
  • SMU is not liable for any agreements made between students and the landlord / hostel management.
  • Please note: Exchange students are required to pay an administrative fee of approx. S$250. This fee includes:

Location & Facilities


  • The Republic of Singapore, is a Southeast Asian city-state off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, 137 kilometers (85 mi) north of the equator. An island country made up of 63 islands, it is separated from Malaysia by the Straits of Johor to its north and from Indonesia's Riau Islands by the Singapore Strait to its south.
  • The country is highly urbanized with very little primary rainforest remaining, although more land is being created for development through land reclamation. Some 5 million people live in Singapore, of who 2.91 million were born locally. Most are of Chinese, Malay or Indian descent. There are four official languages: English, Chinese, Malay and Tamil.
  • Singapore Management University is located in the in the Bras Basah area (Singapore's historic, cultural, and business center). The campus is surrounded by museums, theatres, educational institutions, art galleries, cafés, restaurants and a range of retail outlets.
